After a very long journey we were extremely jet lagged. I had the type and cost of our train tickets from the airport to Cologne on my iPad yet my brain just couldn’t process what to do. After fumbling around like dumb Americans we made the train ride from Dusseldorf to Cologne. After arriving we walked out of central station to be faced with a huge gorgeous cathedral. We then asked the Police to direct us to our Hostel. It was right around the corner! Perfect. We checked our bags and freshened up. The first thing we did was go see the cathedral. It was massive and the main attraction are the “remains of the three magi”. The entire church is focused around these three men. We then decided to pay to climb the tower. Over 500 steps to the top. What a view!
Afterwards we walked around the pedestrian areas. Mostly in a jet lagged daze. Salome falling asleep at every table she could sit at. We decided to go back and take a much needed two hour nap.
We attacked the city with a new vigor that evening. We walked over the Hohenzollern bridge and placed our lock. This was to represent the bond of our family and the start of this trip. The girls then threw the keys into the Rhine River.
We then enjoyed dinner at a local German pub. We shared some liver wurst, bratwurst, knotworst, and a pork cutlet. We were stuffed. It was such a beautiful night that we then took a walk along the River through the old town. Stopping to sit by the river, enjoying some beers and gelato. It was nine at night and the sun hadn’t gone down yet. It was a wonderful way to end our first day.
