Angkor Wat

Posted on

We woke up this morning to meet our tuk tuk driver at 5:00 am. We first went to the main temple to watch the sunrise. It was insanely crowded. Angkor Wat is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Most people know it as the temples from Tomb Raider. This is where Angelina Jolie fell in love with Cambodia and adopted her first son. The temple area is huge! A massive city complex on its own.

We only scratched the surface today by going to the 3 main temples. We visited Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and Banyon Temple. It takes most people 3 entire days to truly explore the ruins completely. We were spent after 5 hours. It is quite expensive for SE Asia at $20 per person entrance fee. Plus we hired a Tuk Tuk to drive us from temple to temple for $17. An absolute must! The crazies on bicycles must be melting! There are not enough fresh coconuts to replenish me in this heat on a bike!

These temples are believed to be 9 centuries old. It is believed to be a funeral temple for King Suryavarman II.

It is amazing. You are in awe of the magnitude and detail that went into building these temples. I am astonished that we are allowed to walk all over the stones and up into the temple.

You truly are transferred into a different era and can envision the entire place encased in gold and jewels. The reliefs are original and beautiful. It really should be on everyone’s bucket list!

  1. Very pretty inlcuding the ruins! I like your hat…very Indiana Jones! Did you get to go to the same area from Tomb Raider or was that only for famous movie stars?

    1. I miss you and wish you were here! We were running late this morning and I actually had to comb my wet hair in the Tuk Tuk on the way to the temples. By the time it dried I looked like a frizzy witch. Lol. I had to buy the hat. To cover my wild hair.

The picture of Sierra and I in front of the Temple with the Banyon Tree roots covering it is the exact spot that from the Tomb Raider movie.
